Artist & Writer
With nothing more than pen, paper, and the evocative drama of chiaroscuro, I create images that speak directly to the heart and soul. Step into my world, shaped by a relentless desire to capture life’s simplest moments and the quiet, enduring essence of our shared humanity.

About Emanuela
As well as having a passion for drawing pen-based chiaroscuro illustrations I also write about my art and enjoy writing, walking and creating walking‑book sketches, carrying a notebook as I move. My background is totally hands‑on: crafting dioramas, shaping wood, experimenting with paint, and exploring any medium that lets me create something tangible. At the centre of it all is a steady passion for learning and for using my hands to shape compositions, objects, and stories.
Chiaroscuro
I apply the chiaroscuro technique to my black‑and‑white ink sketches to create strong visual contrast and a clear sense of depth. My entire composition depends on the balance between light and dark - this is my first step to determine the direction of the light source in order to achieve where the darkest shadows and brightest highlights will appear. I work with a range of ink pens—fine liners for detail, brush pens for broader strokes, and technical pens for consistent lines. Chiaroscuro allows me to define form without relying on colour. Instead, I use variations in line weight, texture, and the concentration of ink to show volume and the direction of the light. The result, I hope, is a set of sketches where the subject appears three‑dimensional, with crisp contrasts guiding the viewer’s attention across the image.
